It is things like this that make me wonder if we're just scratching the surface of our potential as human beings:

Three Rules for Starting a Business

Posted on Nov 6th, 2006 by Jon : Billionaire Jon
OK, this is an going series of blog posts on what I've learned about entrepreneurship.  I have no idea how many tips I have or how long this will run.  It might just be three or it might be 103.  Anyway, it'll serve as a nice way for me to collect my thoughts and hopefully some of y'all might learn something from it. :)  (P.S.  Even though I run my own business I'm far from an expert on this topic...I'm just as much a student of this as the rest of y'all. :))

1.  Just do it.  So many people sit around waiting for the perfect time to start a business.  They must have missed the memo that was sent out that said "The perfect time is now."  Don't think you are smart enough?  Mark Cuban started his own business and is a billionaire and yet the guy doesn't even spell basic words right some of the time (example).  (Still love the guy though!!!)  Don't think you have enough money?  Kevin Rose started Digg on a few thousand dollars and now has a business likely worth hundreds of millions of dollars.  Not having enough capital might have been a good excuse 10 years ago.  It's not today.

I've been scoping out some of these stories online and came across this excellent write-up from Ryan Carson who started DropSend.  It's one of the best descriptions I've seen of what it takes to start a company online these days.  And as you can see, although it isn't free it's a hell of a lot cheaper than it used to be and well within the realm of possible for most people, especially when you consider all the funding sources out there (e.g., credit cards, bank financing, friends and family, etc.)

2.  Start a business that you want to see exist in the world.  Maybe you'd like a healthy fast food restaurant to get food from.  Or a website to help you choose a good doctor.  If you can't find something that suits your needs then you should create it.  My guess is that that is how 95-99% of all successful businesses start out.  Rather than analyzing a bunch of industries and trying to figure out what makes sense from the outside looking in just ask yourself "If you had all the money in the world and you could do one thing to make your life better what would it be?"  OK, I ripped that from this hilarious Ali G skit but it's probably one fo the best pieces of advice I've heard for how to best start a new company.

In fact, that's basically exactly what Jawed Karim said about the founding of YouTube, arguably the most successful start-up story in the last few years.  Here a quote from a recent interview:

"It's very simple: I basically create things that I need myself," Karim said in an interview Thursday. "It just so happens that sometimes other people want to use that."

(By the way, check out this presentation he gave recently for more insight into the founding of YouTube.)

This weekend I was out of town and came up with an idea for something that I would really like to see exist in the world that (as far as I know) doesn't yet.  Because I'm really interested in seeing this idea manifest I just might start it.  At some point I'm sure someone else will have the idea and probably try to do it as well but if that happens then I'll try to keep in mind that....

3.  If you do #2 then your competition doesn't matter.  Most analysis starts with a view of the competitive landscape and a desire to do something that no one else is doing...which is fine, unless you're not completely passionate about what it is that you are doing.  Imagine a grid with "Passionate" and "Not Passionate" on one axis and "Strong Competition" vs. "Weak Competition" on the other.  The best spot to be of course is in a buisness where you're passionate and there is weak competition.  However, I'd make the case that you're much better off going into an area where you're passionate and there is strong competition than going into an area where you're not even if there's weak competition.

Going back to the idea that I had this weekend, let's say I start on it and in 3 months just as I'm getting ready to launch, a bigger and better-funded company decides to launch something similar and possibly much better than what I've done.  Would I be bummed or stoked?  Well, I guess I'd be a bit bummed that I spent some time, energy and money on the idea but I'd be stoked to see it come about it even if it wasn't of my volition.  The fact of the matter is that the only way you can truly lose when starting a business is to start something you don't really care about and then end up getting whupped by your competitors.  Then what are you left with?  Nothing.

Anyway, that's what I've been feeling lately.  So go out and do it.  Find something you want to see manifested in the world and make it happen.  You'll never regret the decision to do that.

"I came to the conclusion that $500,000 was the new $5 million."

That quote from this article pretty much sums up the environment for tech start-ups these days.
Just do it.

"With magic soakin' my spine"

Posted on Nov 10th, 2006 by Jon : Billionaire Jon
Love the new Killers song "Read My Mind" (heck, I love the whole album...)

Breakin' out of this two-star town
I got the green light
I got a little fight
I'm gonna turn this thing around

Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

The good old days, the honest man;
The restless heart, the Promised Land
A subtle kiss that no one sees;
A broken wrist and a big trapeze

Oh well I don't mind, if you don't mind
Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Before you go, can you read my mind?

It's funny how you just break down
Waitin' on some sign
I pull up to the front of your driveway
With magic soakin' my spine

Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

The teenage queen, the loaded gun;
The drop dead dream, the Chosen One
A southern drawl, a world unseen;
A city wall and a trampoline

I never really gave up on

Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

You say I'm falling behind
You say you wanna move on and
Just tryin' to keep it in line
On the corner of main street
Oh well I don't mind, if you don't mind
Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Before you go
Tell me what you find when you read my mind

Slippin
He never returned that call
Woman, open the door, don't let it stay
I wanna breathe that fire again

She said
Oh well I don't mind, if you don't mind
Coz I don't shine if you don't shine

Put your back on me
Put your back on me
Put your back on me

The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds cut out of the sun
When you read my mind

Song of the Day

Posted on Nov 13th, 2006 by Jon : Billionaire Jon
"Idiot Wind" by Bob Dylan

For those days when you're feeling a little bit, er, aggressive. :)

My favorite part:

You'll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above,
And I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love,
And it makes me feel so sorry.

In the future ratings, reputation and personalization will be...

Posted on Nov 14th, 2006 by Jon : Billionaire Jon
Everything

There is too much media out there.  We don't have enough time.

I want to see only stuff that's relevant to me (personalization) and that's high-quality (ratings).  But I also want stuff that's created by solid people (reputation).  This eliminates the possibility of being deceived by sugar-coated stuff.

Give me personalization + ratings + reputation and you have saved me *tons* of time and greatly improved my experience.

eBay is doing reputation.

YouTube and Odeo are doing ratings.

Amazon and Netflix are doing personalization (sort of...)

No one is doing all of the above...

(Puts pinky finger to lips Dr. Evil-style.)

...yet. :)

Rounds of sadness and joy

Not sure whether to laugh or cry...

Before he died in Iraq, 'Toz' had an order for his Green Berets: Attend my Arlington burial, then take this $100,000 for a party in Las Vegas.

10 Things I'm Thankful for this Thanksgiving

Posted on Nov 23rd, 2006 by Jon : Billionaire Jon
10.  My health - 2006 has been a bit of a trying year health-wise.  I haven't dealt with anything life-threatening but a few things have cropped up that have definitely made me more aware of my health and more thankful than ever that I do have the energy and vitality to pursue my dreams.  My heart goes out to all of those who are suffering during this holiday and I pray for their recovery and their ability to grow in spite of the pain.

9.  California - I'm going on 3+ years in California and have learned so much in my time here.  Sure this state isn't perfect (after all it took us almost 3 hours to go 20 miles last night!) but the diversity of people and the ambition that's all around me is worth all the traffic, smog and general craziness.  I still love the Midwest and it'll always be home but for the first time in my life I really feel like California is home as well.

8.  The Internet - Kind of a crazy thing to be thankful for but everyday I'm amazed at how much joy the Internet brings me and others.  From watching crazy cool videos on YouTube to learning about anything and everything on Wikipedia to being able to run my own company the Internet has transformed my life and I want to say thanks to all of pioneers who helped give us this thing that has brought the world so much closer together and given us access to information that we'll use to change the world.

7.  Music - Music re-entered my life in 2006.  I've always loved music but I went through a period where other than a few bands I really didn't listen to much music.  This year has found me completely addicted to Rhapsody and discovering some amazing artists and bands and learning more about the history of music.  Music adds an emotional element to my life on a daily basis and I'm thankful to all of the people producing great songs and albums.  You help make going to work something I absolutely love.

6.  My coaches and mentors - A number of people have coached and mentored me in 2006.  I can't say enough about how helpful this has been.  I'm realizing the power of having people to support you in every area of your life.  And as I receive coaching and mentorship it makes me even more excited to be able to coach and mentor others throughout my life.  It's all about giving back and I've been given so much this year.  Thanks to all of you who've been a part of that.

5.  My teachers - Similarly I've learned from so many people in 2006, many of whom don't even know they've been teaching me.  I've learned about Radical Honesty from Brad Blanton, how to run a business online from Jason Calacanis, non-duality from Ken Wilber, courage from The Hoyts and SO MUCH MORE.  To all of those who are teaching you are heroes.  Don't ever underestimate how powerful of an impact you are making.

4.  Friends - Sometimes I get down on myself because I don't feel that I'm spending as much time as I'd like to with my friends or doing a good enough job of keeping in touch.  But I hope they all know that they're incredibly important to me.  I have a wonderful group of friends and with all of the new people that I met in 2006 this group is getting "wonderfuller" all of the time.  At some point my life will slow down and I'll be able to spend more time with them.  Or maybe it won't but either way I know they'll always be there for me and that means so much.

3.  Freedom - Every day I wake up and literally have the freedom to create my day exactly as I want.  That's unbelievably amazing.  So many people don't have that ability.  Whether it's someone trapped in a third world country with an oppressive dictator or someone trapped in a cubicle in a dead-end job because they lack the knowledge to rise above that situation.  So I'm very thankful that I've been given an environment of total freedom and plan to spend a very significant part of the rest of my life seeing to it that more people have the same incredible opportunities that I've been given.

2.  God - I've felt the presence of Spirit in my life more in 2006 than ever before.  Maybe that comes out of going through some trying times.  Or maybe it's a natural result of shedding some of the ego B.S. and self-consciousness that's been such a big part of my life in the past.  Whatever it is I'm thankful for this re-connection to my Creator and the source energy that guides my life moment to moment to moment.

1.  Family - I love all of my family very much but this Thanksgiving I'm particularly thankful for three people in my life: My Mother, Father and Brother.  My Mother and Father have been incredibly supporting this year.  They've been with me through highs and lows and their unconditional love for me is an example that I hope I can live up to with my children.  My Brother has just totally kicked butt.  Seeing his passion for our business and his ongoing personal and professsional development has been one of my personal highlights in 2006.

I have a TON to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.  I'm truly blessed and inspired by what I've been given.  So thank you to all you who are a part of my life in any way, big or small.  Words can't express how much you all mean to me.

Are you on Kiva yet?

Posted on Nov 24th, 2006 by Jon : Billionaire Jon
If not, you really should be.  Here's me on Kiva.  I'm contemplating telling everyone I know to just get me Kiva gift cards rather than crap I don't need for Christmas.  Hmmm...

Song of the Day

Posted on Nov 26th, 2006 by Jon : Billionaire Jon
With My Own Two Hands by Ben Harper

I can change the world
With my own two hands
Make a better place
With my own two hands
Make a kinder place
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
I can make peace on earth
With my own two hands
I can clean up the earth
With my own two hands
I can reach out to you
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands

Im gonna make it a brighter place
Im gonna make it a safer place
Im gonna help the human race
With my own
With my own two hands

I can hold you
With my own two hands
I can comfort you
With my own two hands
But you got to use
Use your own two hands
Use your own
Use your own two hands

With our own
With our own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
